Chewing Gum Material's Sculptures | 12 Oct 2010 | Probably no-one had ever imagined to use chewing gum to make sculptures. That's a pity, because it seems to be a material full of ductile and expressive possibilities. The effect made by Maurizio Savini is really astonishing. But, besides the aesthetical qualities, there's some significance and irony in his work.

Chewing gum was introduced in Italy by the American soldiers at the end of the Second World War with the blue jeans, nylon stocks and Rock'n'Roll. That's why it's a synonym of cultural colonization and also of the futility which deteriorated the Occidental societies dedicated to consumerism. When we look to the "lean" figures of Savini made with American Gum it's impossible not to think about alienation... (Nino Guevara Ruwano)
